Last night I unboxed my PC-1 and hooked it up. The first thing that I had to do was change the screen size (not the screen resolution). I'm using a HDMI connection to a 19" TV. Out of the box, I was missing about a quarter of an inch on all four sides of the desktop.
On my PC, I started downloading the firmware update and burning it to a SD card. Meanwhile, I explored the system settings and menus. I removed some pre-installed apps that I didn't want and browsed some of the other suggested apps. I downloaded quite a few and just explored the machine a bit. It was slower than I hoped, particular in the Android UI. But the notes in the firmware update say that performance has been improved, so I'm still hopeful.
Once the SD card was ready, I shutdown the PC-1, inserted the card, and turned it back on. And nothing happened. At least, nothing appeared to happen. All I had was a black screen. By this time I was tired and didn't want to risk interrupting the firmware update, so I left it on all night.
This morning I turned it off, removed the SD card, and turned it back on. Fortunately, it booted normally and all seemed to be good. The firmware update definitely worked, as it went back through the "Installing Applications" stage that occurred the first time I turned it on.
I was disappointed to learn that the changes I had made were lost after the firmware update. This included changes in settings, such as my wifi connection, apps that I had removed, and new apps that I had installed. I upgraded from 0.97 to 0.991, so that may have improved. But my experience was similar to taking a SD card with a fully customized Linux install and writing a new distribution over it. Everything that was there previously was lost. I hope the firmware upgrade process improves as more people buy and use the Tauon and provide feedback.
